KARL
IS ROCKING ON DYLAN'S FLOOR (21/05/11)
(Story
By Rachel Dearden as Featured In The Lancashire Evening Post on
Saturday 21 May 2011)
He
has played on a stage where The Beatles performed and shared a bill
with Echo and the Bunnymen.
Now
Preston musician Karl Eland will fulfill a lifelong ambition to
follow in the footsteps of his musical hero Bob Dylan and play at
the world famous Troubadour Club in London.
Karl,
34, says the gig on June 1 is a step up the musical ladder after
a year of recording his own material.
Karl,
of Brook Street, Fulwood, said: “I’m a big fan of American
singer/songwriters such as Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen, and
for me without Bob Dylan they would never have happened - he started
the whole thing.
“To
play my own songs on the same stage in exactly the same spot as
he stood all those years ago performing those early classic tracks
of his will be great, a real honour.”
First
opening in 1954 as a coffee house and folk venue, the Troubadour
has remained at the centre of the London music scene, with performances
by Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Elvis Costello and Led
Zeppelin, and more recently Paulo Nutini, Jamie T and Morcheeba.
But
it was in December 1962, on his first trip outside America, that
Bob Dylan graced the famous stage. For Karl the Troubadour is the
next step.
He
says: “I have always wanted to play there because of the Bob
Dylan connection. He is one of my heroes.
“For
this gig I’m going to play solo, just me and an acoustic guitar,
the way that Dylan first started playing early in his career
“I
played at the Cavern in Liverpool a few years ago where the Beatles
played their early gigs, so this will complete the picture for me.”
Karl
has been performing music since he was 16 and began writing his
own songs about 5 years ago. Last year he released his debut download
single ‘Back in the Day’ as part of a 3 track EP which
was aired on radio stations in the UK, the USA, Canada, Japan, Australia,
New Zealand and Germany.
Today
Karl has a global following and over the last 12 months his fan
base has grown to 150,000 with MySpace pages worldwide.
